CenterPoint Energy: data of more than a million people in Texas stolen
CenterPoint Energy, the Houston-based electricity and gas company, has told the Texas Attorney General's Office that the personal data of more than a million people was stolen from its systems.
What the company has confirmed
- In Texas, 1,062,060 people are affected.
- The stolen data includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers and driver's licence numbers.
- About a month earlier the company had already told the SEC, the US securities regulator, that customer information had been stolen.
- According to the company only part of its customers are affected and its operations were not disrupted.
- The company said it learned of the theft after a criminal announced it publicly.
What is still unknown
The total number of people affected is not known: customers in Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio may also be involved. Someone on a criminal forum claims to hold 7.5 million records, but this claim has not been verified. The identity of the attacker is unknown, and it is not clear whether notification letters have been sent to customers.
